Dick
Jordan was elected to the Florence City Commission in
1979 and was reelected in 1982. When the form of
government changed to Mayor/Council in August, 1984, he
was elected to District 2 of the Florence City Council
to serve a four-year term. He was reelected again in
1992 and 1996, serving as President Pro Tempore each
time. In the 2000 election Dick was reelected and
chosen to serve as Council President.
On
March 15, 2001, as Council President, he assumed the
Office of Mayor due to the death of Mayor Eddie Frost.
During
Dick's years on the City Council, eight new residential
neighborhoods and most of the downtown business district
have been added to the National Register of Historic
Places. These include 337 structures and homes. The
Florence Harbor was redeveloped and the Downtown
Streetscape was completed.
Dick
laid the groundwork and followed through with
constructing the new Florence-Lauderdale Public Library,
which opened December 10, 2002. It was a vision of
Dick's and he made it his goal to insure that Florence
had the most up-to-date library in North Alabama.
As
Mayor, Dick was actively involved with the other mayors
and county officials in Lauderdale and Colbert Counties
to bring unity in developing economic growth. They have
negotiated with the Retirement Systems of Alabama to
develop a Robert Trent Jones Golf Course and a major
four star hotel in the Shoals area. This project has
led to other joint projects that will greatly benefit
our communities.
Dick
was reelected to the City Council for District 2 in
August 2008.
