Other Activities

In addition to the wide variety of recreational sports programs offered by the City of Florence, we also offer a wide variety of Classes, Clubs & Organizations and Senior Activities.

Classes

The Florence Parks & Recreation Department offers a variety of classes each year, some of which are on-going, some are per sessions.  Below is a list of some of the classes currently being offered.  Please check the individual Recreation Centers, Blackberry Golf Course, Senior Citizen Center for up to date activities being offered.

  • Baton -  Offered for ages 3 and up at Broadway Recreation Center each Monday from 5:00pm until 7:00pm.  A monthly registration fee is charged.  For more information contact Sylvia McDonald at (256) 648-6152.
     

  • Belly Dancing – Classes are held each Friday from 5:30pm – 7:00pm at the Royal Ave. Recreation Center.  Call for more information.  760-6425 
     

  • Ladies Golf -  Ladies golf lessons are offered at Blackberry Trail Golf Course.  Call the Pro shop for details.  740-8825.  Class sizes are limited.
     

  • Junior Golf -  Lessons are offered for ages 8 – 16 at various levels of experience.  Call the Pro shop for further details.  740-8825
     

  • Fitness – Certified Instructor, Linda Clanton leads low-impact aerobics and floor exercise classes on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays.  On Tuesday and Thursdays, a walk/run/jog classes are held.  A monthly fee is charged.  For morning classes at Broadway Recreation Center, call 760-6418 and for afternoon/evening classes, call Royal Ave. Recreation Center at 760-6425.
     

  • LifeWise Exercise Classes – (Seniors)  Exercise classes are offered at Broadway Recreation Center on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays from 10-11 am.  For more information call 760-6418.
     

  • Swimming -  Various classes are offered for infants through adults, taught through the American Red Cross.  A registration fee is charged.  764-2911.
     

  • Tennis – League play is available on various Park and Recreation Courts around the city.  Free play is also available.  For more information call 760-6389. 
     

  • TOPS – Take Off Pounds Sensibly.  Meets Mondays from 4:30-7:00pm at the Florence Senior Citizen Center.  Participation is not limited to Senior Citizens.  For more information call 760-6420.

Clubs and Organizations

Have a special interest or hobby?  Perhaps we have a club for you.

  • AARP – American Association of Retired Persons.  Meets the third Thursday of each month for a covered dish lunch at Royal Ave. Recreation Center from 11:am – 1:00pm.
     

  • Bridge – Clubs play at Royal Ave. Recreation Center  on Monday and Wednesdays from 12:00 – 4:30pm and at the Florence Senior Citizen Center on Wednesdays from 12:30-5:00pm.
     

  • CheerClub – Activities for the mentally and physically challenged.  Meets at Royal Ave. Recreation Center the 1st and 3rd Mondays from 7:00pm – 9:30pm.  For more information contact Nora Handley at 383-1525.
     

  • Dulcimer Club – Instructions and jam sessions are held on the fourth Saturday of each month at the Florence Senior Citizen Center from 6:00pm – 10:00pm.  For more information, call 760-6420.
     

  • Dulcimer Club – “Friday Fritters” meet at Royal Ave. Recreation Center each Friday morning from 9:00am – 1:00pm.  For more information, call 760-6425.
     

  • LifeWise - a Senior Activity group, which holds monthly lunch meetings at the Broadway Recreation Center and activities are coordinated through the Florence Senior Center.  Through LifeWise, you can take advantage of trips, programs, educational activities and social clubs.  There is a monthly fee for this program.  For more information call, 768-8056.
     

  • North Alabama Dance Club – (Adults) Ballroom dances and more!  Meets the 3rd Saturday from 7:30pm – 10:30pm at Broadway Recreation Center.  For more information on classes, dances and fees, contact Susie Robbins at 767-1440.
     

  • Quad-Cities Squares – Square dancers meet every Thursday from 7:00-10:00pm at the Royal Ave. Recreation Center.  Open to singles and couples.  Line dancing is also incorporated and fee classes offered during the “Introduction to Dance Night.”  For more information call 760-6425.
     

  • F.A.S.T – Florence Alabama Swim Team.  “FAST” is a competitive swim program for ages 6 – 18.  The swim team is affiliated with USA Swimming and the Tennessee Valley Conference.  For more information call 760-6425.
     

  •  Tennessee River Woodcarvers – Shoals area woodcarvers meet at Royal Ave. Recreation Center the second and fourth Monday evening of each month 7:00pm – 9:00pm.   For information, call 760-6425.


Youth Activities

·         Broadway Recreation offers a variety of Youth Activities for ages 7 – 15 years old.  The following is a list of activities that are offered at our center:

Senior Activities

The Senior’s program has much to offer the community.  The Florence Senior Citizen Center is located at 415 Fairgrounds Road next to Cox Creek Park.  The Center serves a hot lunch daily at a nominal fee as well as offers many other activities, some of which are listed below:

  • Horseshoes- 5 Pits are located behind the Senior Citizen Center
     

  • Cards/Dominoes- Played every Tuesday from 1:00-5:00 pm
     

  • Bridge- Groups play at Royal Ave. Recreation Center on Mon. & Wed. 12:00-4:00pm and at the Senior Citizen Center on Wednesdays from 12:30-5:00pm.
     

  • Billiards- A nice Billiards room is open for play at the Senior Citizen Center.
     

  • Exercise area- Monday, Wednesday & Friday from 8:30 - 9:15 am
     

  • Nutrition Program- Monday-Friday from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

  • Master’s Games – Athletic Competitions with other Senior’s 55+ over from local, district and/or state areas.  District Games are held in September with State Games being held in October.
     

  • Night of Fun – Tuesday night dances at Broadway Recreation Center 6:30pm – 9:00pm.  Sunshine Band provides the entertainment.
     

  • Thursday night dancesSenior Citizen Center 7:00pm-10:00pm; Sounds of Country provides the entertainment
     

  • LifeWise - Exercise classes at Broadway Recreation Center on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays from 10-11 am.
